Spring is coming and I know that is true because the shipping season is going to begin in the St. Marys River next week. That's right-due to lack of ice in the river and requests from the shipping companies, the Corps of Engineers is opening the Locks 4 days early.
Next Sunday, March 21, at 7 AM. the Locks will officially open. Due to a previously scheduled trip to the Sault, I will be there. I just hope there is a boat ready to enter the Locks so we can celebrate the return of boatwatching-one of the most fun hobbies. It really doesn't require any work and is very relaxing.
I hope to see some of you boatnerds at the opening. Let me know if you are coming.

I will be around some place. Either down at Clydes or at the locks. Misson Point is my usual hangout.
Is there a day that one can tour the Locks? I've heard from locals that you can go around the walkways between the locks, etc. My husband LOVES the soo and I wanted to surprise him with a special visit to the locks.
Yes, On Engineer's Day, the Soo Locks are opened for tours. You can cross over the top of the lock and walk around areas that are normally closed. It is always the last Friday in June. The Edison Sault power plant opens that day and is a wonderful building to view. This year Engineer's Day is June 25. Hope to see you there!
